Willy Wonka
Jul. 31st, 2005 11:30 pmCaught it on the IMAX this evening. Keep in mind I went into the theater with an open mind and knowing that the first Willy Wonka is a classic in my mind and nothing can or will replace it. And after watching the movie I give it two and a half stars.
I loved the opening "puppet" show at the factory. It reminded me of the It's a Small World ride at Disneyland. Even better were the reactions of the guests. I felt they were very similar to those of people after they get off the It's a Small World ride. The happy bouncy people are like "let's do it again!" And then the people like me are saying "what the fuck was that???" with worried looks on our faces and the thought in the back of our head of never wanting to live in a world like that. That is until the end of the show, when everybody's face turns into "what the fuck..." With the exception of Willy Wonka, whose reaction was awesome. I love how Johnny Depp would just say things so matter of factly like they were common knowledge and you were stupid for asking.
And the music, well, I found the music to be some what atrocious. I was kind of shocked that Danny Elfman pulled such horrible shit out of his ass. I mean it was nice that it was something soo different that I had started to wonder if Burton had used a new composer however after seeing the credits I was horrified. There was a family walking out at the same time as me and the kid commented on the music as well and his parents dismissed it as Burton's weird music.... I disagree, well, kinda, the music was weird, but weird horrible, not weird good... First of all the techno shit sounded like it belonged in an alien movie. Yes, they could have seen it being appropriate for this movie since they wanted to portray Wonka as someone very foreign, kinda like an alien, but I'm sorry, in my mind.... NOOOO. Just say NOOOO. And the Violet Beauregarde song... I couldn't help wonder if it was going to be a flamer, but then as it went on, it had a strange resemblance to an ABBA song.
I also didn't like the Oompa Loompas. There was nothing special or spectacular about them... Yes, more modern, but booorrrrinnnngg.
I did love that they showed the participants who lost leaving. I guess because I had assumed from the first film that they were returned in their old condition. I like that in this it showed them leaving and showed that they didn't leave as they had entered. Which only makes sense and I can't believe I thought otherwise before.
Yeah, so I think that's it for my rambling review... Oh, wait! No, that's not it... Augustus... Did he have eyebrows???? Was that really his face? His skin was like perfect and he had no fucking eyebrows. WTF?
