Some styles are built using HTML tables for layout, and when somebody jacks up the HTML format in their own post, they can blow up your entire friends page (suddenly Moods & Song are above the entry instead of below, the descending column of nice neat entries gets jacked sideways and diagonal)...the fun never stops, until the offending entry drops off the page.
Other, newer styles are built on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which tell the page how to act without using HTML, and thus aren't quite prone to the same jackassery. Usually. I don't know which ones are which, yet, unfortunately...
Try a filter of your friends page that doesn't include your regular friends, like just Communities, and see if it soes the same thing. If so, it's a problem with someone's entry. If not, then it's something more basic to your style, but I'd doubt that, as you'd have x% of LJ complaining every day...
