Wiccans against Witches and Ghosts?

There is a Wiccan at my mom's work who is stirring up all kinds of trouble because she has told everybody that witch and ghost decorations are offensive... *scratches head* Am I not getting something here??? If you ask me Halloween is the best time to go shopping for kewl cauldrons, witches, ghosts, et. al. I don't think all witches are offensive and I'm certainly not about to jump down somebody's throat for putting up a green warty witch... So, I don't get it. Anybody? Anybody?

I too have heard this same kind of PC for paganism argument from other pagans regarding how "muggles" portray "us" at Halloween. I look at it like this... its kind of like being Christian and putting Santa and his Raindeer up in the windows at home (My mom and I did that). They *know* that "Jesus is the reason for the season" but putting up secular things. To me, the green warty witch is kind of a secular thing... Does that make sense to anyone but me?

No, I can agree with that.

In every religion, there are assholes. If I were to make an only slightly-educated guess, I'd say that she became Wiccan less than two years ago, and is involved in one of the pointier feminist strains. Some of those ladies get cranky about the Miss Pointy Hat and Green Face witch, but they usually mellow out of it eventually.

"In every religion, there are assholes."

These are words of great wisdom.

At some point, hopefully she'll develop a sense of humor, and realize green-faced Halloween witches are very minor in the grand scheme of things.

Well, she didn't really point to the green faced witches. She said any and all witches. I was trying to say that I can understand if she takes offense to them and don't plan to buy one myself, but at the same time I would never make anybody who had one take it down.

Just what the world needs, more fundamentalists.

The spiel I've heard is that the women accused of being witches in the Burning Times were generally older, poor, uneducated, etc. The inquisitors beat the women and their bruises turned green by the time they were hung/burned/whatever. Thus OMGYOU'REMAKINGFUNOFPOOROLDDEADWOMEN!!!!111!!!!! by having the green-faced hag around.

(BTW, not my view of the matter. I lovelovelove Halloween stuff....)

[identity profile] chainwoman.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've never heard that before...

[identity profile] wenchamok.livejournal.com 2005-10-15 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I haven't heard it much, but it tended to come from the more uptight and mega-feminist types... *shrug* To each their own, I guess.

bah, the green-faced, warty witches are my favorite!! Get a life, strange, wiccan lady, and complain about something that means something. :D
